Amakye Dede Crowning Kuami Eugene ‘Future Of Highlife’ Not Wrong – Bessa Simons

Veteran musician and aspiring Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) President, Bessa Simons says he sees nothing wrong with fellow highlife veteran, Amakye Dede crowning Kuami Eugene Future King of Highlife at the recently held Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

Some people felt the gesture was inappropriate as it disrespected some members in the highlife fraternity. Others claimed it was for hype purposes, adding that, Amakye Dede had no crown to elect a successor.

But, reacting to this, Mr Simons said it was apt for Amakye Dede to do so.

He explained that Amakye Dede can be said to be one of the pioneers who championed highlife across the borders of Ghana.

Mr Simons added that, though Amakye Dede hasn’t been officially crowned the King of Highlife to give to another, he deserves the title and more for his legacy.

“Amakye Dede is a king in so many ways and we respect that. He is the highlife king. He is the musician who has for years and decades traveled the world. If other musicians can live up to his legacy then we are getting there.

“For me, he can crown anyone for taking highlife music. I think if Amakye crowns anyone as the new highlife king then its proper, they shouldn’t condemn him because he is not a small man. He is still working and a great musician. He is called for shows and still respected in the industry and his music is still relevant so he deserves respect and not condemnation,” he said On Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Wednesday.
