Actor, John Dumelo, surely knows of other ways to reach out to his fans apart from the silver screens. For some time now, the screen idol has been giving back to society through his charity works.

Just recently, he gave scholarships to 10 brilliant but needy tertiary students and he now has plans to tackle maternal mortality.

The Joy FM 2009 Best Ghanaian Actor told Showbiz in an interview ‘’Maternal mortality is a national problem. Yes children are gifts from God but what’s the point if in giving birth women and children lose their lives? I feel so sad when I hear stories of women dying because childbirth. Every woman who goes to give birth is entitled to enjoy her child and not die in the process.”

And to tackle the problem, Dumelo with support from health officials will embark on outreach programmes nationwide to sensitise women from rural communities especially of how harmful some of the traditional practises are.

“ I believe maternal mortality is on the rise because the people who live in the rural communities cannot afford medical treatment and consult all sorts of quacks thus leading to death during child birth.

“My team and I will provide free medical treatment, talk to them about safe practices among others and I believe that will go a long way to help curb the menace.

Throwing light on his charity works, Dumelo said he has been doing such social interventions for years with his foundation.

“The John Dumelo Foundation has been in existence for six years now. I just want to give back to society, because the society has been very helpful with my career. I have a team of five people who help me with the foundation. We’ve undertaken so many projects in parts of Ghana, Liberia, Zambia, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Malawi.

“Some of the projects I have done in Ghana include distributing stationary materials, school bags and clothes to kids in the rural areas annually. I rehabilitate some primary schools also in Ghana. I repeat these things in countries outside Ghana too’’ he stated.

John Dumelo, who entered acting as early as seven years with the movie Baby Thief, has starred in about 150 movies so far and has won several awards.

“The King Is Mine” actor is set to return to the screens in December 2015 and January 2016 with three movies.
