Menzgold grabs top global law firm Over BOG, SEC legal battle

Menzgold got a massive boost on Monday when it acquired the services of the highly-regarded international law firm of Amsterdam & Partners LLP in its legal dispute with the Bank of Ghana (BOG) and the Securities and Exchanges Commission (SEC).

In its biggest display of its trenchat desire to protect the Ghanaian company from the threats of the BOG and SEC, the owner of Menzgold, Nana Appiah Mensah, moved to retain the services of the London-headquartered firm.
Amsterdam & Partners LLP, a law firm specialised in representing some top politicians in the world with high flying success, recently represented opposition Ugandan Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) in his fight against the government.

Menzgold sued the BOG and SEC at the Commercial Division of the High Court for alleged illegal decisions and notices that the gold dealing firm says have harmed its business.

According to a writ of summons by Menzgold, the two institutions, BOG and SEC, have by notices and warnings to the public to be wary of dealing with the company, and have conducted themselves in a manner that seemed to it that they as “Regulators were bent on finding fault and undermining its business.”

Menzgold’s economic venture has been on-going for almost six years to the knowledge of the general public and the 1st and 2nd Defendants, and that in the said period a lot of people have accrued rights and that same cannot be interfered with in such an arbitrary, capricious or biased manner either by resentment, prejudice or personal dislike in the issue of directives and notices as same is contrary to the 1992 Constitution.
Menzgold is asking the court to make some declarations bordering on the nature of its business, as well as restrain the two regulatory bodies from further ‘baseless’ acts and to award exemplary damages against them.

The firm, experienced in taking on high profile cases, will join the Ghanaian legal team of Menzgold and have expressed their pleasure to represent Menzgold hoping to secure a favourable ruling.

“It is a pleasure to work with Mr. Appiah Mensah and the Menzgold Ghana team, and assist in this matter where they have been subject to unfair treatment,” said Robert Amsterdam, the founding partner of Amsterdam & Partners LLP.
“Our team will liaise closely with local counsel on the ground in Ghana to work toward a successful resolution for the company management, its loyal customers, and the relevant regulatory agencies.”

The legal firm expertises in resource nationalism, human rights, political advocacy, anti-corruption, arbitration and litigation, extractive industries, as well as frontier markets.
Amsterdam & Partners, the international law firm has engaged in matters and representations globally and throughout Africa.
