Reasons Why Ghanaian Musicians Struggle – Sarkodie

Ghanaian rapper Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, says Ghanaians fear to invest in the creative arts industry.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the “Adonai” hitmaker said no one has ever contacted him with the aim of investing in his music career, adding that he funds his music projects himself.

He has, therefore, attributed the difficulties faced by most artistes to breakthrough on the lack of funds.

According to him, Nigerian artistes have investors ready to check every requirement necessary for an artiste to become successful but Ghanaians don’t.

His assertion stems from the fact that Ghanaian songs are hardly played in Nigeria and on the back of some A-list Ghanaian artistes being “snubbed” by fans at a recent Zylofon Concert held in Nigeria.

“Most of their artistes have investors. Ghana is a place that all these artistes working are doing it on their own. I have never had someone put GHC 1,000 Cedis in my career. It’s always us trying to make it. Management is different. Investing is a whole different thing. Here, it’s passion and being economical and it stresses the artistes.

If they had people taking care of them, all they need to do is to become creative. If you pamper an artiste, it makes recording fun and they give hits. That’s why most of the Nigerians enjoy and we don’t do that. There are a lot of things behind the scene that a lot of people don’t know…” Sarkodie explained.

He also told Andy Dosty that we need to be patriotic and support the Zylofon CEO, Nana Appiah Mensah since he sees him to be plugging loopholes in the music industry.

“That’s why big up Nana Appiah Mensah. His intension is to use Zylofon to change the perception out there. He doesn’t know this, he is only doing business. but he wants to be one of the few people to change it and these are people who will give you money and not necessary based on the returns…” he said.
